The team reported for its first day of work at the mission. Something had happened or hand't happened, which meant the goal of the work had changed from building the foundation for a school to a building a safe play area for children inside the mission walls.
The nature of the labor remained the same: Breaking up rock-hard soil and moving it out of the way. And the thin air at 12,500 feet took its toll.
